Qimei Island
Qimei Township is located at the southernmost tip of the Penghu Archipelago. In the early Qing Dynasty, it was referred to as “Nanyu” or “Dayu.” It wasn’t until 1944 that it separated from “Wang’an Zhuang” and became “Dayu Zhuang.” The following year, it was renamed “Dayu Township.” Later, in remembrance of the virtuous and moving deeds of the Seven Beauties, it was renamed “Qimei Township” as a permanent tribute. Qimei Island is a dissected plateau. Due to water flow and geological formations, river valleys have formed in Xihu Village to the north and Pinghe Village to the west. The entire island is a sloping plateau, higher in the northeast and lower in the southwest. A mountain ridge running east to west, known locally as Zhongqi Mountain, divides the island into northern and southern parts. Qimei Island has the second highest elevation in the Penghu Archipelago, second only to “Mao-island.”
Dongyuping Island
Dongyuping Island and Xiyuping Island are located to the west of Xiji Island. According to geologists, Dongyuping Island was formed approximately 8 million years ago during the last volcanic activity in the Penghu Archipelago. In other words, Dongyuping is the youngest island in the Penghu Archipelago. The permanent population is only around 20 people, with settlements mainly distributed in the western and southwestern depressions. The now-closed Yuping Elementary School has been demolished and rebuilt to provide new spaces for tourists engaging in eco-tourism.
Dongji Island
Dongji Island, located in the Penghu Archipelago of Taiwan, is an important strategic point on the Taiwan-Penghu route. Administratively, it belongs to Dongji Village, Wang’an Township, Penghu County. The waters surrounding this island (excluding the island itself) are part of Taijiang National Park in Tainan City. As for the island itself, approximately 1.34 square kilometers of land had been incorporated into the South Penghu Marine National Park as of 2009.
Xiji Island
Xiji island is located about 5 kilometers west of Dongji Island and features a flat mesa terrain, with its highest point being Yan Tun Mountain. The island slopes from north to south, with columnar basalt cliffs on the west and north sides extending over 800 meters. These cliffs are particularly majestic when viewed from the sea. The action of waves and sea winds has eroded many areas of the basalt into sea trenches and sea caves. Among these, the most distinctive is the sea cave known locally as “Zaolong,” which allows one to look up and see the sky.
Wang’an Island
Wang’an, renowned for its green sea turtles, is the fourth largest island in the Penghu Archipelago and one of the famous sources of agate. The island features undulating terrain and expansive grasslands, where cattle roam freely. The western side boasts rugged basalt cliffs and natural bays, earning it the nickname “Honeymoon Island.”
Hujing Island
Hujing Island is the seventh largest island in the Penghu Archipelago, known for its majestic columnar basalt formations. It is located along the Tropic of Cancer at 23.5 degrees north latitude. In 2020, it was selected as one of Taiwan’s classic small towns. The island features a 55-meter-long “Chasing the Sun Avenue,” with a giant hand art installation at the end of the path, symbolizing an embrace of the falling sunlight. The clear and beautiful waters below the cliffs have earned the scenic spot the nickname “Hujing Clear Abyss.”
Tongpan Island
Tongpan Island is a typical mesa formed of basalt, surrounded by well-developed and neatly arranged columnar joints of basalt. Due to its stunning rock formations, it is often referred to as the Yellowstone of Penghu. Visitors can enjoy the scenery along the concrete path encircling the island. On the southwest coast of Tongpan Island, there is a concentric circular hole on the marine abrasion platform, formed by the outpouring of basaltic magma, known as the “Lotus Terrace,” which is a volcanic crater remnant.
